History, Mystery, and More! – Sacramento End of Year Museum Events

As the year comes to a close, there is still tons of fun to be had, especially at your local museums! From guided educational tours to even some spooky experiences, there is something for everyone. Check out all the events below and see how many you can fit into your schedule.

California State Railroad Museum – NMRA Model Railroad Weekend - November 4, 2023

Calling all train enthusiasts! The California Railroad Museum is hosting a limited-time event full of multiple different types of model railroads that you can see up close. Taking place both Saturday and Sunday, you can visit the museum and take a walk around seeing tons of different displays all hosted by the Nation Model Railroad Association. Plus, admission is free! There will be opportunities to engage with the models and ask the layout owners questions to learn more about their displays.

You can also visit the museum's "Magic of Scale Model Railroading", an exhibit always on display celebrating the world of model railroading, what it takes to make this hobby what it is, and how to get into it yourself!

Sacramento History Museum – Living History – Every Second Saturday

Aimed at keeping the past alive, the Sacramento History Museum has historical recreations of individuals, events, and activities every second Saturday of the month! You can find them on the streets of Old Sacramento or within the Hastings Annex to learn all about the lives of early Sacramento citizens.

If you're interested in being a part of history, you can even join their troup! No prior history knowledge is necessary, and all are welcome. They have a closet full of different historical outfits to choose from, and they are always looking for more to join. Check out their volunteer application here.

Aerospace Museum – Veterans Day Open Cockpit – November 11, 2023

This Veterans Day, the Aerospace Museum is hosting its annual Open Cockpit Day. Experience the historic and modern cockpits of tons of different aviation staples. Spend the day exploring their grounds and take a peek at the inside of vintage aircraft.

Folsom History Museum – In Search of Folsom's Paranormal – November 17, 2023

Halloween may be over, but the spooky season never is! Check out Sutter Street's haunted history, what's lurking in the shadows, and so much more. Partnering with the Northern California Amateur Paranormal Society (NORCAPS), join Folsom History as they guide you through ghost tours throughout the Historic District. With the use of handheld monitoring devices, you can figure out what is on the other side and uncover the mysteries of Folsom.

Verge Center for the Arts – The Verge Art Auction – November 18, 2023

Verge Center for the Arts is hosting the art event of the year. Their annual Art Auction helps to provide local art lovers and collectors with opportunities to acquire original works of fine art. All proceeds go to supporting non-profit organizations and, of course, the community of artists themselves. The auction commences with an opening reception on November 9th from 5-8, with food and drink to enjoy while you plan what you'd like to bid on. Then, the big event happens on Saturday, November 18th, when there are silent and live auctions. Grab your tickets here.

Sutter's Fort – Flashlights and Friends – December 1, 2023

If you want to extend your spooky season even longer, join Sutter's Fort for a night of adventure and explore the entire fort park like never before. They offer flashlights and lanterns (for purchase) that you can use to traverse the historic site after dark.

During your exploration, you can also enjoy live music and treats, like their home-made s'mores. They also will have games, self-guided tours, opportunities to learn about the nature of Northern California Bats, and so much more.

Crocker Art Museum - ArtMix: Sweater Weather - December 14, 2023

To celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, Crocker Art Museum is hosting one of their super fun ArtMixes, where they invite you to don your ugly Christmas sweater and vote for your favorite Gingerbread house. They also have design-your-own holiday cards ready for you to say precisely what you want this holiday season. From cringey carols to cheesy traditions, there's something for everyone here.
